July 10, 2007

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Tuesday night, July 10th, was the 4th annual CARQUEST Extreme Wednesday program at Stafford Motor Speedway. Rob Summers scored his first career ISMA Supermodified feature victory by winning the 50-lap feature, Erica Santos was the winner of the 25-lap NEMA Midget feature, and Jeff Zuidema was the winner of the 20-lap Pro-4 Modified feature event.

In the 50-lap ISMA Supermodified feature event, Dave Trytek took the early lead from the pole and was setting a blistering pace. Summers quickly moved into third behind Trytek and Jeff Holbrook.

Chris Perley, the two-time CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday champion, was quickly working his way towards the front of the field in the early laps, and he overtook Summers for third place on a lap-14 restart. Three laps later, Perley motored past Trytek to take over the race lead. Summers followed Perley past Trytek, and from that point of the race, Perley and Summers turned the race into a two-man show.

Summers kept in close contact with Perley as they sliced their way through traffic. At one point, Summers nearly had Perley passed, but had to back off due to lapped traffic. After Summers' aborted move for the lead, Perley began to stretch out his lead. But lapped traffic would once again come into play, this time in Summers' favor. On lap-39, Summers had closed back in on Perley and Summers navigated the lapped traffic to perfection as he went past Perley to take over the lead. Perley was never able to mount a serious challenge as Summers scored his first career ISMA Supermodified victory. Perley finished second, with Mike Lichty, Dave McKnight, and Trytek rounding out the top-5.

In the 30-lap NEMA Midget feature event, Erica Santos followed in the footsteps of her brother, Bobby Santos, III, who won last year's NEMA Midget portion of CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday, and became the first female to win a race in NEMA history. Santos started on pole, and began to pull away from the field. Santos built up a large lead over the first half of the race, but her margin over second place Greg Stoehr was erased by the caution flag on lap-18. Stoehr took the lead from Santos on the restart and began to open up a large lead of his own.

Stoehr at one point had a half straightaway lead over Santos, but once Stoehr began to encounter lapped traffic, Santos quickly erased that margin. On lap-26, Santos made the pass of the night, threading her way through lapped traffic to overtake Stoehr and move into the lead. Once Santos was back out front, she once again opened up the margin over second place. Joey Payne moved around Stoehr for second and closed in on Santos at the end, but couldn't run Santos down. Payne finished second, with Jeremy Frankoski, Jeff Horn, and Ben Seitz rounding out the top-5.

In the 25-lap Pro-4 Modified feature, the battle for the win came down to a pair of teammates. The race took the green with Matt Sagar setting the early pace, but Sagar was overtaken on lap-4 by Rob Richardi for the top spot. Richardi surrendered the lead back to Sagar on a lap-5 restart, and Sagar then led until lap-8 when George Sherman took his turn out front. Sherman then held the lead until lap-14 when teammates Jeff Zuidema and Norm Wrenn both moved by Sherman, who got loose in turn 4 and lost several spots. Zuidema held the lead until a lap-18 restart that saw Wrenn power past. Zuidema moved back by Wrenn on a lap-19 restart and Zuidema then fended off the challenges of Wrenn over the final five laps to score his second consecutive CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday Pro-4 Modified feature win at Stafford Motor Speedway. Wrenn finished second, with Dan Meservey, Sagar, and Richardi rounding out the top-5 at the checkered flag.
