LOOK BACK AT THE 2003 By: Scott Running 2003 was the 19th season of the Stafford Motor Speedway / CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship. CARQUEST Auto Parts continued their NASCAR Touring division support by sponsoring the Whelen Modified Tour Spring Sizzler and CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend, as well as the CARQUEST 150 and CARQUEST Fall Final Busch North Series events. CARQUEST also continued their support of Stafford's weekly divisions with a $150 bonus to each SK Modified® feature winner and a $125 bonus to each Late Model feature winner. The Whelen Modified Tour made four stops to Stafford during the 2003 season with Ted Christopher winning the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler and Todd Szegedy winning the August Town Fair Tire 150. Jerry Marquis was the big winner of the Whelen Modified Tour events, taking both the May TSI Harley-Davidson 150 and the season ending CARQUEST Fall Final 150. The Busch North Series made three visits to Stafford during the 2003 season with Martin Truex, Jr. winning the N.E. Dodge Dealers 150, Tom Carey winning the CARQUEST 150, and Mike Johnson winning the CARQUEST Fall Final 150 event for the second consecutive season. The SK Modifieds® entered their 22nd season of competition with Kerry Malone taking the track championship. Malone secured the championship without the benefit of a single race victory. Malone's week to week consistency was enough to beat out Eric Berndt and Ted Christopher for the title. Berndt won once and Christopher led the division with 6 wins, but he also had 7 finishes of 20th or worse. Other multiple feature winners for the season included Bo Gunning with 3 wins, and Brad Hietala and Chris Jones, who each won twice. Single event feature wins were taken down by Scott Foster, Jr., Johnny Lobo, Jr., Berndt, Jeff Baral, Jimmy Williams, Frank Ruocco, and Ronnie Silk. The 2003 season was the 17th season of Late Model competition at Stafford and it was Ryan Posocco taking down his first career track championship to end the 2-year run of Jim Peterson at the top of the Late Model standings. The battle for the championship was a neck and neck affair all season long between Posocco and Mike Quintiliano, with Posocco taking the title by a mere 4 points at season's end. Woody Pitkat and Posocco tied for the division lead with 4 wins each, while Jay Stuart won three times and Quintiliano and Chuck Zentarski each won twice. Single event feature wins were scored by Craig Collins, Peterson, and Tom Butler. The 2003 season was the 11th season of DARE Stock competition and leading the way was Bobby Leone, John Hurley, Jr., Kevin Gambacorta, Andrew Durand, Scott Hitchcock, Michael Bennett, and Stacey Botticello, who each scored 2 wins. Single event feature wins were scored by Patrick Grady, Gwenn Gaumond, Dan King, Vince Gambacorta, and Paul Conte. Paul Varricchio, Jr. won the Paradiso-Muska DARE Stock Shoot-out.
