LOOK BACK AT THE 1997 By: Scott Running 1997 was the 13th season of the Stafford Motor Speedway / CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship. The 1997 season saw the return of ESPN2 to Stafford to offer television coverage of the Whelen Modified Tour CARQUEST 300 and the 40-lap SK Modified® feature as part of Stafford's CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend. CARQUEST Auto Parts continued their support of the Busch North Series with the CARQUEST 150 and continued the CARQUEST Quest For Success Award for the fifth consecutive season. The Whelen Modified Tour made four stops to Stafford during the 1997 season with Mike Stefanik winning the April CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, the May TSI Harley-Davidson 150, and the August Town Fair Tire 150. Only Tim Connolly's victory in the season ending CARQUEST 300 kept Stefanik from making it a clean sweep at Stafford. The Busch North Series made two visits to Stafford during the 1997 season with Jerry Marquis winning the CARQUEST 150 and Andy Santerre was the winner of the Stafford 150 Busch North Series event. The SK Modifieds® entered their 16th season of competition with Jimmy Broderick taking down his first career Stafford track championship. It was a banner year for Broderick as he won 6 times and recorded 13 podium finishes. Steve Chowansky was able to win 5 times during the year, but he could not match the consistency of Broderick throughout the season. Broderick's 6 wins led the division, and between Broderick and Chowansky they accounted for 11 wins of the 21 SK Modified® features held at Stafford in 1997. Bo Gunning won three times, Ken Barry and Bob Potter each won twice, and Lloyd Agor, Ted Christopher, and Mike Christopher each won once. The 1997 season was the 11th season of Late Model competition at Stafford and it was Gary Pelletier who took the track championship ahead of Chuck Zentarski and Dennis Botticello. Zentarski was the points leader for much of the season, but Pelletier came on strong towards the end of the season. Pelletier tied with Dean Casagrande for the division lead in wins with 3 each, and Robert Palmer, Jim Peterson, Gene McClain, and Dennis Botticello each won twice. Single event feature wins were turned in by Dave Ellison and Bob Botticello. The ProStocks entered their 8th season of competition at Stafford Motor Speedway, with Tom Rosati winning the track championship. The championship fight was a tight battle between Rosati and Jim Mavlouganes, with Rosati taking the title at the season ending CARQUEST Fall Final. Todd Anderson led the division with 4 victories, while Rosati, Bill Lauridson, and Willie Hardie each won twice. Single feature victories were turned in by Brad Boissonneault, Wayne Bellefleur, Matt Bushior, Tom Fearn, Mike O'Sullivan, Dave Etheridge, Chuck Docherty, Matt Kobyluck, and Mark Forino. The 1997 season was the 5th season of DARE Stock competition and leading the way was Robert Goulet with 4 victories. Nick Bazzano, Jose Rodriguez, and John Yale, Sr. each won twice with single event wins going to Terry Page, Woody Pitkat, Chet Burdick, Gary Spinnato, and Gary Zelonka.
