A LOOK BACK AT THE 1992
STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEASON

By: Scott Running

1992 was the eighth season of the Stafford Motor Speedway / CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship. CARQUEST Auto Parts was once again the title sponsor of the CARQUEST 150 Whelen Modified Tour event for the fourth consecutive season.

The Whelen Modified Tour made four stops to Stafford during the 1992 season with Rick Fuller taking the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, Reggie Ruggiero was the winner of the Connecticut Classic 150 and the CARQUEST 150, and Mike Stefanik was the winner of the season ending CARQUEST Fall Final.

The SK Modifieds® entered their 11th season of competition with Bob Potter taking down his second consecutive and third career Stafford track championship. Potter won two of the first three races of the 1992 season, but the duel for the championship was a see-saw battle between Potter, Bo Gunning, and Ted Christopher. Gunning held the points lead heading into the final race of the year, but Potter cemented his championship run with a victory in the CARQUEST Fall Final SK Modified® feature event. Potter scored three victories during the season, which tied him with Steve Chowansky, Gunning, and Christopher as the big winners of the year. Tom Tagg nailed down 2 wins, while single feature event wins were scored by Mike Paquette and Richie Gallup.

The 1992 season was the sixth season of Late Model competition at Stafford and it was another tight points race between Brad Boissonneault, defending track champion Chuck Zentarski, and John Leger. Leger took down a division leading 5 victories during the 1992 season, including 4 wins in a row, but Boissonneault himself won 4 times during the year and he took the championship honors. Fred LaForge was the only other multiple feature winner of the year with 2 wins while Ricky Shawn, Cliff Stakey, Bob Skinger, and Chuck Docherty all took home a single feature victory.

The ProStocks entered their third season of competition at Stafford Motor Speedway, with Tom Roasti taking the championship ahead of Jeff Zuidema in another tight point race that lasted throughout the 1992 season. Brad Bennett was the big winners of the year with 3 victories, while Zuidema, Rosati, Tom Fearn, and Marty Membrino each reached victory lane twice during the year.
