LOOK BACK AT THE 1991 By: Scott Running 1991 was the seventh season of the Stafford Motor Speedway / CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship. CARQUEST Auto Parts was once again the title sponsor of the CARQUEST 150 Whelen Modified Tour event for the third consecutive season, and they were also the title sponsor of the CARQUEST 150 for the NASCAR K & N Pro East Series, known then as the NASCAR Busch North Series. The Busch North Series had made a visit to SMS in 1987 and did not return to Stafford until 1991 with the support of CARQUEST Auto Parts. Mike Stefanik came home the winner that night, matching his victory in the Inaugural CARQUEST 125 event for the Whelen Modified Tour in 1989 at Stafford. The Whelen Modified Tour made three stops to Stafford during the 1991 season with Jeff Fuller taking the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler and the CARQUEST 150, while Tom Baldwin came home the winner at the season ending CARQUEST Fall Final. The SK Modifieds® entered their 10th season of competition with Bob Potter taking down his second career Stafford track championship. The championship fight during the 1991 season was a year-long duel between Steve Chowansky, Bob Georgiades, defending track champion Mike Christopher, and Potter that went down to the final race. Potter was the point leader for much of the season, but he never enjoyed a large margin in the standings. Potter scored three victories during the year and 2 of those wins came in the final 2 events of the season, which cemented his championship season. Chowansky was the big winner of the year with 4 victories, while Mike Christopher nailed down 2 wins. Single feature event wins were scored by Bo Gunning, Ted Christopher, and Georgiades. The 1991 season was the fifth season of Late Model competition at Stafford and it was a banner year for Chuck Zentarski. Zentarski took down a division leading 5 victories during the 1991 season and he romped to the track championship ahead of Chuck Docherty and Don Wood. Jim Mavlouganes and Bob Skinger were the only other multiple feature winners with 2 victories each while George Bessette, Wood, Docherty, and Art Caruso all took home a single feature victory. The ProStocks entered their second full season of competition at Stafford Motor Speedway, with Jim McCallum outlasting Dave Caruso in a flip-flop of the championship fight from the 1990 season. McCallum and Tom Roasti were the big winners of the year with 3 victories each, while Jerry Marquis was the only other multiple feature winner with 2 victories. Single feature victories were scored by Chris Kopec, Jeff Zuidema, Dave Caruso, and Mark Forino.
