A LOOK BACK AT THE 1989
STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEASON

By: Scott Running

1989 was the fifth season of the Stafford Motor Speedway / CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship and was perhaps the most influential season of the relationship. After the Whelen Modified Tour was removed from the 1988 schedule at Stafford, Rich Pallai had a sit down meeting with Mark Arute and Ed Yerrington to discuss bringing the cars back to Stafford prior to the start of the 1989 season. An agreement was reached and the Whelen Modified Tour returned to Stafford for three races in 1989, including the CARQUEST 125, the first NASCAR Touring event to be run at Stafford Motor Speedway with title sponsorship from CARQUEST Auto Parts. Mike Stefanik was the winner of the CARQUEST 125, his first of 9 wins at Stafford in CARQUEST sponsored events. CARQUEST Auto Parts has been a title sponsor of Whelen Modified Tour events at Stafford every year since that Inaugural CARQUEST 125, sponsoring a single event from 1989-1994 before becoming the title sponsor of the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler and the CARQUEST Fall Final events in 1995, a tradition that continues to this day.

In addition to winning the CARQUEST 125, Mike Stefanik was also the winner of the Spring Sizzler, while Reggie Ruggiero was the winner of the 200-lap Fall Final event.

The SK Modifieds® entered their eighth season of competition with Mike Christopher taking the first of what would be three Stafford track championships in the SK Modified® division. Ted Christopher was again the dominant car of the 1989 season, winning 5 of 15 races, but again he couldn't match the consistency of his twin brother in the race for the track championship. Mike Christopher recorded three victories during his championship season, while Jeff Barry and Bob Potter were the other multiple feature winners of the season with 2 wins each. Single feature wins were recorded by Ed Spiers, Jerry Pearl, and Brad Thrall, giving the SK Modified® division 7 different winners during the year.

The 1989 season was the third season of Late Model competition at Stafford and for the third consecutive season, Phil Rondeau reigned supreme. Chuck Zentarski was the big winner of the season with 4 feature victories, but Rondeau was able to win twice and his consistency kept him at the front of the pack in the chase for the championship. Scott Foster was the only other multiple feature winner with 2 wins, while Tom Tagg, Cliff Stakey, Art Caruso, Tom Sylvester, Tony Sylvester, Leo Adams, and George Bessette each recorded a single victory, giving the Late Models an astounding 10 different winners in 15 races. The ProStocks made their first appearance at Stafford Motor Speedway, running seven non-points shows. Tom Rosati, the 1977 and 1978 Limited Sportsman track champion at Stafford, won 3 of those races, while Tony Papale won twice, and Jeff Zuidema and Paul Suprenant each won once.
