A LOOK BACK AT THE 1988
STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEASON

By: Scott Running

1988 was year 4 of the Stafford Motor Speedway/CARQUEST Auto Parts relationship. For the 1988 season, CARQUEST shifted their contingency support of the SK Modified® and Late Model divisions to heat and consolation events, paying each heat and consolation winner $100. Kendall Oil was also part of the promotion with each heat and consolation winner receiving a case of Kendall Oil along with the $100 from CARQUEST Auto Parts.

The 1988 season saw the Whelen Modified Tour cars removed from the schedule, setting up a CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler with Stafford's SK Modifieds® as the featured division. Ted Christopher was able to outlast Bob Potter and Bo Gunning to take his first career victory in "The Greatest Race in the History of Spring." Although the Whelen Modified Tour cars returned to Stafford in 1989 thanks to CARQUEST Auto Parts, the 1988 CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler was a landmark event in helping to make the SK Modified® the premier weekly open wheel division in the Northeast. The top-3 finishers from that race have accounted for 162 SK Modified® feature victories and 15 SK Modified® track championships and counting at Stafford Motor Speedway as well as numerous feature wins and track championships at other area tracks.

The SK Modifieds® entered their seventh season of competition with Bob Potter taking the first of what would be five Stafford track championships in the SK Modified® division. Ted Christopher was the dominant car of the 1988 season, winning 8 of 16 races, but Potter showed that week to week consistency will prevail at season's end. Potter was the only other driver with more than 1 victory tallying 2 wins for the year. Single event feature winners included Jeff Barry, Bo Gunning, John Anderson, Jerry Pearl, and John Jensen.

The 1988 season was the second season of Late Model competition at Stafford and again, Phil Rondeau reigned supreme. Rondeau again led the division with 4 feature victories, while other winners included Tony Sylvester and Wade Gagner with 3 wins each, Ricky Shawn with 2 wins, and Tom Tagg and Brian McCarthy each won once, giving the Late Models 6 different winners in 14 races.

Ronnnie Rocco won the 30-lap SK Modified® Non-Qualifiers race during the
CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler and he celebrates the victory here with his two car owners, Jeff and Keith.
