LOOK BACK AT THE 1981 By: Paul Arute 1981 was again a year of domination for the legendary Richie Evans. He was able to beat the competition and win nine times over the course of the year. Evans' supremacy propelled him to his second consecutive track championship, becoming only the second driver to attain this feat in the modified division. Ray Miller, one of only 4 drivers to compete weekly at Stafford since it was paved, was the only other modified driver to win more the twice-in 1981 he took checkers 4 times. Bob Polverari took the Spring Sizzler, Ray Miller won the Ferrara 100, and Richie Evans dominated all other extra distance races. The Street Stock division saw the usual season with a lot of competition and many different winners. Though he only recorded one win all year, Pat Chambrello was able to notch his first track championship. The season saw 10 different winners with only Mike McTeague and Dave Dickerman winning more than one race, both drivers scored three victories. In the Limited Sportsman division, Jerry Marquis won his second consecutive track championship with 3 wins throughout the season. Pete Fiandaca won a division high 5 times and showed that he had a dominant car by consistently posting top 5 finishes, yet he did not have enough to overtake Marquis. The final point battle was a tight race between Marquis and Fiandaca. One notable winner from 1981 was current SK Modified® driver Dan Avery, he grabbed two wins in his number 22 Limited Sportsman.
