A LOOK BACK AT THE 1972
STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY SEASON

By: Paul Arute

1972 was a very exciting year for Stafford Motor Speedway. April saw the debut of "The Greatest Race in the History of Spring"; the Spring Sizzler. A crowd of nearly 12,000 turned out to see Ed Flemke dominate until his water pump broke on lap 70 to crown Fred DeSarro as the winner of the inaugural Spring Sizzler.

DeSarro dominated the season winning six times; he took the point lead from Bob Santos mid summer and never looked back. He went on to claim the 1972 modified track championship, followed by Bob Santos, Leo Cleary, Ron Bouchard, and Ed Flemke; a total of 75 different drivers competed at the track in 1972.

Del Cushing was the All-American Sportsman champion; second was Bob Witkop; third was Ron Wilson.

1972 was also a very historic year for the modified division. It was the beginning of the "Pinto Revolution" which was an era that saw a transition form the old style coupes to the more modern recognizable pintos. Over 10 pintos competed at Stafford in 1972 setting off a movement that would change the face of modified racing.
